A thermodynamic theory of sorption in glassy polymers

چکیده

Sorption of vapors by glassy polymers is known to have properties that are different from those typical for sorption rubbery or liquids. Despite an importance many practical applications, this difference still not fully understood. We developed a thermodynamic theory description penetrant activity in the state. The presented approach considers glass transition terms second order phase and utilizes heat capacity changes calculation activity. formalism here explains deviation state equilibrium values. Moreover, sorption-desorption hysteresis can be explained as well. demonstrate only change polymer, but also should considered understand between three cases: liquid, absorption desorption glass. tested on experimental data water maltodextrin bovine submaxillary gland mucin. A very good fitting both cases demonstrated. values increments components obtained used get new insights into non-equilibrium materials.

Thermodynamics of water sorption in high performance glassy thermoplastic polymers

Sorption thermodynamics of water in two glassy polymers, polyetherimide (PEI) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK), is investigated by coupling gravimetry and on line FTIR spectroscopy in order to gather information on the total amount of sorbed water as well as on the different species of water molecules absorbed within the polymers, addressing the issue of cross- and self-interactions occurring in...

Craze initiation in glassy polymers

In this work a method is presented that can be used to predict craze initiation in glassy polymers. The approach is based on the view that the development of a craze is preceded by de formation of a localised plastic deformation zone. As this zone develops, the hydrostatic stress increases, and, when exceeding a critical stress level, cavitation will take place, leading to local development of ...

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers: Thermodynamic and Kinetic Considerations on the Specific Sorption and Molecular Recognition

This article presents a work aiming at thermodynamically and kinetically interpreting the specific sorption and recognition by a molecularly imprinted polymer. Using Boc-L-Phe-OH as a template, the imprinted material was prepared. The result indicates that the prepared polymer can well discriminate the imprint species from its analogue (Boc-D-Phe-OH), so as to adsorb more for the former but les...

Thermodynamic picture of the glassy state

A picture for thermodynamics of the glassy state is introduced. It assumes that one extra parameter, the effective temperature, is needed to describe the glassy state. This explains the classical paradoxes concerning the Ehrenfest relations and the Prigogine-Defay ratio. As a second part, the approach connects the response of macroscopic observables to a field change with their temporal fluctua...

Molecular dynamics simulations of glassy polymers

We review recent results from computer simulation studies of polymer glasses, from chain dynamics around glass transition temperature Tg to the mechanical behaviour below Tg. These results clearly show that modern computer simulations are able to address and give clear answers to some important issues in the field, in spite of the obvious limitations in terms of length and time scales. In the p...
